Pronghorns ready for puck drop against Cougars

After facing two nationally-ranked opponents over the past two weekends, the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns women’s hockey team returns home for Canada West action starting tonight.

Meanwhile, following their first 2-0 weekend, the Pronghorns men’s team seeks to keep the momentum up as they hit the road this weekend.

The Horns women host the Regina Cougars tonight at 7 p.m. at Nicholas Sheran Arena and again at 3 p.m. on Sunday, while the men head to Regina to face the Cougars.

Last weekend, the Pronghorns women (4-6-1-1) lost 1-0 in a shootout and 2-1 to the fourthrank­ed Manitoba Bisons in Winnipeg and two weeks ago took three of four points off the Alberta Pandas.

The Horns are in seventh place in the Canada West, two points back of the Calgary Dinos and three back of the Cougars.

Third-year goaltender Alicia Anderson continues to log all the time in the cease for the Pronghorns, ranking first in the Canada West with 447 saves and second in save percentage (0.962). She also boasts a a 1.43 goals against-average.

Tricia Van Vaerenberg­h leads the Horns with three goals and five points, while rookie Alli Borrow has three goals.

Following a pair of 4-3 overtime wins over the Bisons that improves them to 3-8-1-0, the Pronghorns are in Regina to face the Cougars, who are one point behind seventh-place Lethbridge in the standings.

Pronghorns captain Mitch Maxwell put up a six-point weekend against Manitoba — scoring the overtime winner in Saturday’s game — earning him the Canada West first star of the week honour.

He is tied for third in Canada West scoring and leads the Pronghorns with six goals and 11 assists.

Justin Valentino continues to produce for the Pronghorns at a steady pace, scoring twice last weekend to up his totals to 10 points in 12 games.

Goaltender Garret Hughson was in net for both wins last weekend and has appeared in eight of the Horns 12 games

He has a 3.88 goals against-average and a 0.894 save percentage.
