Christmas Kettle campaign looks to surpass $150,000

The Salvation Army’s annual Christmas Kettle campaign funding drive is officially underway.

The organization held a formal ceremony on Friday at the Northside Walmart, complete with speeches and a small brass band.

“This event raises money we can use throughout the year,” said Barney Barnaby, kettle co-ordinator for the Christmas Kettle campaign in Lethbridge.

Barnaby said the campaign has raised more money each year and has surpassed goals for the past four years he has been involved. Last year, the campaign raised close to $150,000. The goal this year is to raise more than $150,000.

“We’ve always been able to meet our goals or go over it,” he said. “But that’s only because of the support of the people of Lethbridge.”

Lethbridge MP Rachael Harder was on hand and said the event is an important way to support the work of the Salvation Army and helping those in the city who need it most.

“At Christmas time, it is a very important time of year to be involved in our community and give back,” she said.

She thanked the community for helping make the campaign a success.

“The Salvation Army’s success depends on the willing part of those who live in Lethbridge,” she said. “It depends on your generosity, and your willingness to give a little bit out of your chequebook each month.”

Barnaby said the campaign does not require much of its volunteers other than being present. That makes it a good fit for anyone with mobility issues who are interested in volunteering over the holidays but who might be limited in what they can take

part in.

“This is a fairly easy job,” he said. “They can sit if they want and ring the bell. It’s comfortable and we’re in a warm spot.”

“Everyone has their choice about what they want to do.”

There are still a large number of volunteer spaces available for anyone interested in helping out with this year’s campaign.

“I’m about 60 per cent full right now,” Barnaby said.

Anyone interested in getting involved with the campaign can call Barney Barnaby at 403-7158622.
