Pronghorns men’s hockey team wins third straight

- LETHBRIDGE HERALD

The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns men’s hockey team has upped their winning streak to three games.

The Pronghorns scored a 6-2 road win over the Regina Cougars in Canada West play Friday night in Regina.

With the win, the Horns improve to 4-8-1 with their season-high six-goal outing and move their winning streak the three games after a 2-0 sweep of the Manitoba Bisons last week at Nicholas Sheran Arena.

On the women’s side, the Pronghorns struggled to find the back of the net in another close loss, losing 1-0 to the Cougars at Nicholas Sheran Arena to fall to 4-7-1-1.

In Regina, Sam McKechnie handed the Pronghorns a 1-0 lead after the first period.

Jay Merkley scored on the power play 28 seconds into the second period and Dalton Sward made it 3-0 Lethbridge a little over nine minutes later.

The Pronghorns added three more goals in the third courtesy of Connor Sanvido, Taylor Fisher — on the man advantage — and Tyler Hansen — shorthanded — to round out the scoring.

Blake Orban had three assists for the Pronghorns, while Dallas Valentine and Ryon Moser added two helpers each.

Garret Hughson earned in the win in goal, facing 29 shots.

At Nicholas Sheran Arena Friday, the Pronghorns lost their seventh one-goal game and have been shut out five times.

The Cougars first goal in three games — a power-play marker from Emma Waldenberger late in the first period — was all the hosts needed to earn the win that improves them to 6-6-0-1.

Pronghorns veteran goaltender Alicia Anderson faced 38 shots in the loss, while Lethbridge managed 16 shots on goal.

The Pronghorns women are back at Nicholas Sheran Arena this afternoon at 3 p.m. in the rematch with the Cougars.

The Horns men face off against Regina at 6 p.m., local time.
