Galt is open to suggestions

- Dave Mabell LETHBRIDGE HERALD

What’s an important story waiting to be told?

What are visitors looking for when they visit the Galt Museum?

What could be so interesting, you’d come back for another look?

Those are some of the questions behind the Galt’s new online search for new ideas. Some have already arrived via www.surveymonkey.com/r/9LGQCJG

Paper copies of the survey are available at the museum for those who aren’t accustomed to the online site, says curator Aimee Benoit.

The museum and archives staff members need to plan ahead for the next three years, she explains. That’s how long it might take to find extra material for a feature presentation, or to bring in a travelling exhibition like “The Rise and Fall of Emilio Picariello,” currently on view.

The current schedule of events covers 2018, she says, so southern Albertans are being asked for ideas for exhibitions sometime from 2019 to 2021.

“We do get feedback on a continuing basis,” Benoit says, and visitors are also invited to comment.

“This is more focused,” and Galt staff hope to hear from southern Albertans who seldom visit as well as those who drop by frequently.

The museum staff organizes displays for two hallway showcases as well as the seasonal exhibits in part of the main gallery, Benoit points out. And the Galt’s archivists present two more.

Presentations in each location normally change three times a year, she adds. The next round of changes will begin in January.

“We try to keep the themes and topics of the exhibits diverse.”

It’s the second time Galt planners have invited local residents to be part of the planning process, Benoit notes. Last time, she says it was more of a “crowd sourcing” approach.

“It’s been very successful,” she says.

The online survey has just begun, “And we’ve had a lot of responses already.”

The survey will close Dec. 8.
