Pronghorns soccer coach resigns

- Dale Woodard LETHBRIDGE HERALD

After one of the most successful seasons in the team’s history, Fred Trinh has resigned as head coach of the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns women’s soccer team. The Pronghorns announced Wednesday Trinh — the Pronghorns head coach since February of 2016 — was stepping down for personal reasons.

After leading the Pronghorns to their best record in 10 years, finishing with a 5-7-2 record and a second playoff appearance in the last three seasons, Trinh steps down on a high note.

“I got to do everything I planned and it worked out really well and I’m satisfied,” he said. “I wanted to leave it (program) better than I found it. I just wanted to improve on what it was. I had a plan, it worked out well and I was really happy with that.”

A longtime assistant coach, Trinh was named interim coach on Jan. 29, 2015 and had the interim tag removed the following February. Over the three seasons that he was head coach, he compiled a record of 10-25-7.

The 16 goals the Horns scored last season was also the most they’ve scored as a team since the 2005 season.

Assistant coaches Ilsa Wong and Jack Reddy have been elevated to interim co-coaches.

“Fred has been a great advocate and supporter for our women’s soccer program,” said U of L executive director Ken McInnes. “He was with the program for a long time and has been an important part of its success over the years especially the last two as the head coach. We will miss him here in Pronghorn Athletics but he has left the program in a better place than when he started. You can never thank someone like Fred enough for their dedication and hard work on behalf of our student athletes.”

The former Horns coach credited those who helped out during his tenure.

“If you have a vision and a dream you really have to throw everything in it to acomplish it and along the way you can’t do it by yourself,” said Trinh. “With my wife (Rebecca’s) support and kids support it was awesome. At the end of the day, you have to do a job and it was really nice, looking back, that not too many people thought this was possible and it’s nice to show it is possible when you’re committed.”
