Key weekend for Pronghorns hockey

Winners of three of their last four, the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns men’s hockey looks to keep that upswing going in the final weekend of conference play before the semester break.

The Pronghorns (4-9-3-0) clash with the 7-4-0-0 Calgary Dinos in a home-and-home set starting tonight at Nicholas Sheran Arena at 7 p.m. before heading to Calgary Saturday night.

On the women’s side, the 5-7-2-1 Pronghorns start the weekend in Calgary tonight against the Dinos before bringing it back to Nicholas Sheran Saturday at 7 p.m.

Having won three of their last four, the Pronghorn men are within two points of the UBC Thunderbir­ds for the final playoff spot with 14 games to play.

The Horns have scored the fewest goals in Canada West with 34, but have scored four or more goals in three of the last four games.

Lethbridge captain Mitch Maxwell sits fifth in Canada West scoring with six goals and 12 assists and is within five points of 100 career points.

Veteran Justin Valentino is on a three-game point streak and is second on the team in points with 12. He is also tied with Maxwell for the team lead in goals with six.

Goaltender Garret Hughson has started the last four games and has a 4-5-1 record, a 3.71 goals against-average and a 0.898 save percentage.

Key points are also up for grabs in the women’s games this weekend.
