Wheaties top the Canes

- Dale Woodard LETHBRIDGE HERALD

The Lethbridge Hurricanes fourgame winning streak was stopped and their chance to get back to .500 was denied. The Canes were downed 5-1 by the Brandon Wheat Kings during Western Hockey League play Friday night at the Enmax Centre to see their four-game clip stopped and put the team at 11-131-0.

A pair of shorthanded goals by Wheat King Evan Weinger on the same infraction 55 seconds apart was enough to power the Wheat Kings to their fourth straight win.

Hurricanes defenceman Calen Addison prevented the Canes from a home shutout loss with his sixth goal of the season midway through the third, but the rest of the scoring was all Wheaties as Brandon opened up a 4-0 lead after 40 minutes.

That ended Canes starting goaltender Stuart Skinner’s night as back Reece Klassen came on in the third period.

Weinger’s shorthanded goals and another by Ty Lewis handed Brandon a 3-0 lead after the first.

Cole Reinhardt upped the visitor’s lead to 4-0 heading into the second intermission with the sole second period goal with 3:08 left in the period.

Connor Gutenberg made it 5-0 Wheat Kings 8:05 into the third before Addison denied Brandon goaltender Logan Thompson’s shutout bid at the 11:10 mark of the third.

Skinner stopped 21 of 25 shots he faced in the first two periods. Klassen turned aside 12 of 13 shots in the third.

Brandon was 0-for-1 on the power play, while the Canes were 0-for-4 as the Wheat Kings outshot the Lethbridge 38-33.

The Hurricanes are back at the Enmax Centre tonight when they host the Victoria Royals at 7 p.m.
