Hurricanes outshoot Oil Kings 40-20

- Dale Woodard LETHBRIDGE HERALD

In a lead-swapping affair between the Lethbridge Hurricanes and the Edmonton Oil Kings, the Oil Kings scored last. The two teams swapped goals throughout 60 minutes and tacked on one more minute in overtime before the Oil Kings prevailed with a 6-5 win in Western Hockey League play Friday night at the Enmax Centre.

On Ugly Sweater night in the Canes final home game before Christmas, the Hurricanes could only salvage one aesthetically challenged point as Edmonton rallied from a 5-3 deficit before Trey Fix-Wolansky finished the comeback one minute into overtime.

“We just weren’t ready to go tonight,” said Hurricanes forward Jake Elmer, whose team fell behind 20 in the opening 3:56. “You could see in the first period, we were flat. It’s on the older guys today, we weren’t prepared. I think we could have done a lot better preparing. It was just an off-night for us. We’ll regroup for the next few days and we’ll come back for the next game.”

The Oil Kings took a 1-0 lead a little over two minutes on a goal from Brett Kemp.

The Hurricanes went to the power play 3:34 into the game, but it was the visitors who went up 2-0 as Ethan Cap sent a shot past Hurricanes goaltender Stuart Skinner that was initially waved off, but ruled a goal after a short review.

The Canes cut that lead in half with 8:47 left in the first when captain Giorgio Estephan spun and got his stick on a rebound in front of the Edmonton goal, hammering a shot
