Classic tale comes to life
LCI FINE ARTS PRESENTS ANNE OF GREEN GABLES
The LCI fine arts departments have teamed to stage a musical adaptation of Anne of Green Gables, the story of an adopted orphan girl growing up on Prince Edward Island in the early 1900s.
The production has been in the works since auditions were held the first week of school, involving contributions from the band, choir, dance, art, drama, and shop programs.
Director and drama teacher Kelly Frewin says the collaborative approach has allowed students to explore multidisciplinary areas of expertise.
“I’ve had a lot of people come to me and tell me they can’t sing and they’ve got lead parts singing solos and are great,” he said. “People say ‘I can’t dance’ and are leading the dance rush on stage, and people who said they couldn’t act but are acting fantastic.”
This is the school’s first musical production in five years. It features the work of more than 80 students in two casts, as well as props and stage technicians, set painters, and two live orchestras.
The choice of Lucy Maud Montgomery’s classic Canadian tale coincides with Canada’s 150th celebrations.
“It’s definitely a Canadiana piece,” said Frewin. “It’s a nice, sentimental piece and it’s great for families. We thought it’d be great for every audience and everybody involved.
“I think Anne of Green Gables is fairly ingrained in our societal knowledge and everybody knows at least something about it. So it’s just a nice way to put it all together, bring something that’s common between all of us and put it on stage.”
The play runs at the LCI Performing Arts Centre Monday-Friday this week at 7 p.m. and a special matinee performance on Saturday at 1 p.m., along with a number of elementary school matinee performances.
Tickets are available through SchoolCash online or at the LCI Textbook Centre.
