Cougars, Pandas win Classic titles

The Cardston Cougars boys basketball team captured their own tournament last weekend.

The Cougars downed the Magrath Zeniths 76-64 in the gold medal game of the Cougar Classic Saturday night in Cardston.

In the girls gold medal game, the Magrath Pandas took home the title by edging Okotoks Foothills Composite 61-59.

The LCI Rams won the bronze medal on the boys’ side with a 76-65 win over Saskatoon Holy Cross.

The Raymond Comets won the boys’ consolatio­n side thanks to an 82-62 win over Foothills Composite.

In the girls third-place game, the Cardston Cougars prevailed with the bronze medal following an 81-62 win over the Raymond Comets.

The LCI Clippers won the consolatio­n side with a 69-42 win over Chestermer­e.

Cardston’s Ty Lewis was named as the boys most valuable player, while Taylor Barfuss (Cardston), Taylor Cook (Magrath), John Evans (LCI) and Hunter Boriskewic­h (Foothills Composite) were named as tournament all-stars.

Adi Strong of Magrath was named the girls MVP.

Jenna Taylor (Magrath), Alli Taylor (Foothills Composite), Anni Soper (Cardston) and Maitlynn Miller (LCI) were named to the girls all-star team.

Paycen Blackmore and Taylor Cook scored 26 and 23 points respective­ly as the hometown Magrath Zeniths topped the Catholic Central Cougars 90-73 in Southern Alberta High School Basketball League play Tuesday night.

Taylor Harker added 12 points for the winners, while Sam Payne finished with 11. Magrath led 48-32 at half.

C.J. Hirsche led CCH with 18 points, Nate Moreira and Shae Gibb both scored 14, and Jonathan Vander Beek had 13.

In the junior varsity game, Harker and Ammon Goldthorp both scored 13 as Magrath won 69-37. Corbin Russell had 11 points.

Inigo Castro scored 11 points to lead the Cougars.
