Man sentenced for assault

- Delon Shurtz LETHBRIDGE HERALD

When employees at a Lethbridge hotel went into a room last September to clean, they knew something terrible had happened.

Accustomed to messy rooms, they likely expected to see towels on the floor and an unmade bed. What they didn’t expect to see was blood all over the floor and blood on the bed.

The room was the scene of a bloody assault by Pete Edward Small Legs against a woman with whom he had been drinking Sept. 21. The two had finished off a 40ounce bottle of vodka and returned to the hotel room in which they were staying. Everything was going fine until the woman said something that upset Small Legs.

The enraged man threw the woman onto the bed, climbed on top of her and repeatedly punched her in the face. After she fell to the floor he kicked her in the ribs. Blood covered the victim’s face and clothes, and she was taken to the hospital where medical personnel treated her bruised and battered body.

Small Legs pleaded guilty Tuesday in Lethbridge provincial court to one count of assault and was sentenced to three months in jail. He was also placed on probation for one year, during which he is not allowed to have any contact with the woman or consume alcohol, and he must receive counselling as directed by his probation officer.

Although Crown prosecutor Michael Fox and defence lawyer Tyler Raymond jointly recommended the threemonth jail term, Small Legs was given credit for the equivalent of 72 days spent in custody after his arrest, leaving him with only 18 days to serve on his sentence.
