‘Farm Fresh Alberta’ to highlight southern Alberta food, drink

Southern Albertans produce an impressive number of foods for Canadian families and for export. But not everyone living here realizes the scope of our agrifood industry. That’s the idea behind “Farm Fresh Alberta,” a no-charge public event here next month.

It’s being introduced by local associates of Real Estate Centre, as an addition to the business’s annual auctions for charity.

The late-afternoon event is set for Jan. 13 and spokesperson Heleen Jacobsen says local food and drink companies are signing up to take part. The food showcase will run from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Multicultural Centre downtown, to be followed by live and silent auctions.

Jacobsen says proceeds from the event will go to Stars Air Ambulance, with a donation to Halo Rescue, a similar service covering southeastern Alberta. Last year, at a smaller venue, Jacobsen says the event raised more than $30,000. With more people coming to a more central location, she’s hoping to raise more.

Many southern Albertans and families have been served by the air ambulance organizations, she points out, but they rely on public support to keep flying.

Confirmed participants, Jacobsen says, include major firms like Cavendish Farms — which will sample its different varieties of fries. But visitors will also be able to learn about smaller companies, including one that prepares mixes for people who need a gluten-free diet.

There will be no charge for admission or the samples, she adds. Food and drink producers are also offered free table and display space, on a first-come basis.

Prospective participants, as well as those donating items for auction, can contact the event organizers at register@realestatecentre.ca — or call 857-220-7500 for more information.
