Temperatures, prices get slashed
Boxing Day shoppers took advantage of the deals offered at many of the retail stores and electronics outlets throughout the city Tuesday despite having to brave frigid temperatures, with environment Canada posting a low of -34C at 6 a.m. when doors opened on some stores’ day of sales.
Business seemed brisk at the Best Buy on the city’s southside, with a steady stream of traffic and shoppers carrying out electronics, computer accessories and media. Staff helped wheel out items such as large-screen televisions while a lineup of people waited patiently at the mobile phone desk for new cellphones and plans, a popular Boxing Day purchase.
Shoppers also took advantage of price slashing happening at two retailers in the city set to soon close their doors.
Western Canadian sporting goods and hunting supplier Wholesale Sports Outdoor Outfitter is closing this week and bargain seekers picked through the mostly empty shelves at the Lethbridge location to snag a few remaining deals.
The scene was a similar one at Sears, an anchor store at Park Place mall. Sears Canada began liquidation in October after 65 years in business. The Lethbridge Sears location has posted its closing is set for the end of next week.
With an extreme cold warning in place and cold temperatures expected to continue until warmer weather forecast on Monday, shoppers will likely have to continue to bundle up if heading outdoors for the extended Boxing week sales offered at many stores.
