Sugar Bowl hits the floor

The opening day of the 51st annual Sugar Bowl hit the court Tuesday afternoon at Raymond High School. The eight-team field includes four southern Alberta boys high school basketball teams including the host Raymond Comets, the Cardston Cougars, Magrath Zeniths and LCI Rams.

In the opening game Tuesday afternoon, the Cougars defeated the Camrose Trojans 103-65 as five Cardston players hit double digits.

Leading the Cougars was Taylor Barfuss with 18 points, while Ben Atwood hit for 17.

Ty Lewis and Adyn Card each had 16 points for the Cougars and Tristan Infanti chipped in with 10.

Liam Schaffner lead the Trojans with 22 points. Griffin Lorenz put up 16 points for Camrose and Josh Watson had 10.

The Zeniths started the tournament off with a loss Tuesday afternoon, getting handed a 94-82 setback by the Edmonton Harry Ainlay Titans despite a 38-point outing from Taylor Cook.

Paycen Blackmore chipped in with 24 points for Magrath and Sam Payne drained 12.

Ajou Ajou led the Titans with 21 points and Sabry Philip and Brandon Micklejohn had 20 and 18 points, respective­ly.

The late games between the LCI Rams and Edmonton Ross Sheppard and the host Comets and Okotoks Foothills were still in progress at press time.

Action wraps up today at Raymond High School, starting with the consolatio­n semfinals this morning at 10 a.m. between the Zeniths and the Trojans and the loser of the LCI/Ross Sheppard game and the Comets/Okotoks match.

The consolatio­n game takes place at 4 p.m.

The championsh­ip side draw begins at noon today with the winner of the LCI/Ross Sheppard game taking on the winner of the Comets/Okotoks game, followed by Cardston and Harry Ainlay at 2 p.m.

The bronze medal game is slated for 6 p.m. with the gold medal game following at 8 p.m.
