Hurricanes look to tame Tigers

-

Medicine Hat that dropped Lethbridge to 1517-2-0 and into third in the Central Division, two points behind the Kootenay Ice and eight points behind the Tigers.

The Canes will look to get back on the winning track minus Ryan Bowen, who was suspended indefinitely by the team Wednesday after the 19-year-old forward was notified of a trade, but informed the Hurricanes and the acquiring team that he would not report to the new team.

The forward from Chilliwack, B.C., missed the first two months of the season while rehabbing off-season shoulder surgery before joining the Hurricanes on their western road trip last month.

In 13 games, he had one goal and six points.

That puts the Hurricanes at 23 players including 14 forwards, seven defenceman and two goaltenders.

On Wednesday, the Hurricanes led 1-0 after two periods thanks to a power-play goal from Jordy Bellerive, but four Tigers goals in the third period made the difference as Medicine Hat padded their lead atop the Central Division.

Hurricanes rookie goaltender Reece Klassen got the start in Medicine Hat, stopping 36 of 39 shots and getting third-star honours.

Bellerive’s goal Wednesday was his teamleading 18th of the season, giving the property of the Pittsburgh Penguins 44 points in 33 games.

Lane Zablocki — acquired by the Hurricanes from the Red Deer Rebels earlier this month in exchange for forward Josh Tarzwelll — added the other Lethbridge goal, his first since being acquired.

After tonight’s game, the Hurricanes head to Calgary Saturday to take on the Hitmen and round out the 2017 portion of their schedule.

The Hurricanes are back home Tuesday when the Ice visit the Enmax Centre at 7 p.m.
