Skrlik rink stays undefeated at Alberta Junior championsh­ip

Kayla Skrlik remains undefeated as the 2018 Alberta Junior Women’s Provincial Curling Championsh­ip heads into the final day at the Lethbridge Curling Club.

Skrlik and her Falher Curling Club of third Ashton Skrlik, second Hope Sunley and lead Megan Johnson defeated Selena Sturmay of the Saville Community Sports Centre in Edmonton 5-3 in the opening draw Friday morning and put up another 2-0 day to move to 6-0 thanks to a 12-5 win over Ryleigh Bakker of the Calgary Curling Club in the evening draw.

Skrlik’s win over Sturmay in the opening draw was a close one with neither team scoring more than one point in an end.

But Skrlik took a 3-2 lead in the seventh and stole another in the eighth to take the lead for good en route to the win.

In the evening draw, Skrlik grabbed a commanding lead with a four-ender in the first end and three more in the fifth end for a 7-2 lead.

The Falher rink sealed the win with another four-ender in the eighth as the teams shook hands early.

Heading into the final day, Abby Marks of the Saville Community Sports Centre from Edmonton sits in second at 4-2.

Marks defeated Kathryn Lepine of the Calgary Winter Club 11-5 in the first draw and Lauren Marks of the Airdrie Curling Club 11-2 in the evening draw.

Elysa Crough from the North Hill Community Curling Club from Calgary posted two wins Friday to move to 3-3 heading into the final day.

Crough downed Lauren Marks 9-8 in the morning draw and defeated Lepine 8-5 Friday night.

Also at 3-3 is Sturmay, who beat Taitan Hagglund of the St. Albert Curling Club 9-3 in the evening draw.

Hagglund, Lepine, Lauren Marks and Bakker are all 2-4.

Meanwhile, Desmond Young of the Airdrie Curling Club was handed his first loss in the sixth draw Friday night to sit at 5-1 heading into today’s play.

Young and his rink of third Michael Dumont, second Cole Lewis and lead Mathias Babin were defeated 7-5 by Mark Taylor of the Glencoe Curling Club and are tied with Karsten Sturmay of the Saville Community Sports Centre heading into today’s play.

Young doubled up Cole Adams of the North Hill Community Curling Club 8-4 in the morning draw before their loss to Taylor Friday night.

In the sixth draw setback, Taylor put up a four-ender in the eighth end to rally from a 4-2 deficit and take a 6-4 lead.

Young replied with one in the ninth to make it 6-5 coming home before Taylor added one in the 10th with the hammer for the win that improves him to 3-3.

Sturmay beat Taylor 10-2 in the opening draw and moved into a tie for first with Young thanks to a 7-1 win over Adams in the Friday night draw.

Evan Van Amsterdam of the Crestwood Curling Club in Edmonton and Ryan Jacques of the Saville Community Sports Centre in Edmonton are tied at 4-2.

Van Amsterdam beat Layton Tremblay of the Dawson Creek Curling Club 11-2 in the Friday morning draw, but lost 9-6 to Jacques Friday night.

Jacques blanked Matthew Grant of the Grande Prairie Curling Club 13-0 in the Friday morning draw.

The seventh draws for the men and women goes this morning at 9 a.m.

If two tie-breakers are necessary, the first will take place at 2 p.m. today with the second following at 7 p.m.

If one tie-breaker is necessary, it will take place at 7 p.m.

If no tie-breakers are necessary, the semifinal will take place at 7 p.m. tonight.

If a tie-breaker is necessary today, the semifinal will go Sunday morning at 9 a.m.

The men’s and women’s finals go 2 p.m. Sunday.
