Kodiaks taken to the limit

They got pushed to the fifth set, but the Lethbridge College Kodiaks women’s volleyball team started the second half of their season on a winning note.

The Kodiaks and the Ambrose University Lions went the distance as the teams clashed in Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference action Friday at the Val Matteotti Gymnasium before the Kodiaks pulled out a 15-12 win in the fifth set to improve to 9-4.

On the men’s side, the Kodiaks swept the Lions 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 2517) to improve to 8-5.

In the women’s game, the Kodiaks won the first two sets 25-22, 25-22 before the Lions won the next two (28-26, 25-18) to force the fifth set.

The teams kept the fifth set close before the Kodiaks closed it out.

Kristine Ward let Lethbridge with 23 kills, while Corissa Mildenberg­er and Taya Mikado each had 12.

Carmen Nadeau had 13 digs for the Kodiaks and Ward put up 10.

Shelby Rinehart had three blocks for Lethbridge.

In the men’s game, Dax Whitehead paced the Kodiaks with 13 kills and Carter Hansen had nine. Whitehead also had four service aces.

Defensivel­y, Tony Albizzati put up seven digs and Marcus Biesheuvel added three blocked shots.

The Kodiaks go for the sweep in the rematch tonight in Calgary. The women’s game goes at 6 p.m. with the men to follow at 8 p.m.
