Huskies hold off Horns

- LETHBRIDGE HERALD

The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns men’s hockey team were unable to overcome an early twogoal deficit.

Opening the second half of their Canada West season Friday night at Nicholas Sheran Arena, the Horns were edged 3-2 by the nationally third-ranked Saskatchewan Huskies in Canada West action.

The Pronghorns trailed 2-0 after the first period before Lethbridge’s Russell Maxwell got the hosts on the board 4:14 into the second.

The Huskies regained their two-goal cushion midway through the second before Connor Sanvido got the Pronghorns back to within one with 1:46 left in the second.

That’s the way it stayed as the teams skated through a scoreless third period.

However, the hosts had some quality chances as Dalton Sward and Maxwell had shorthanded breakaway chances turned aside by Huskies goaltender Jordan Cooke.

With the loss, the Pronghorns fall to 7-9-1 and are tied for fourth in the Canada West with the UBC Thunderbirds and the Mount Royal University.

Horns goaltender Garret Hughson stopped 34 of 37 shots in the loss.

The teams skate into the rematch tonight at 7 at Nicholas Sheran Arena.

On the women’s side, the Pronghorns were blanked 2-0 by the Huskies in Saskatoon and are 3-10-2-2 on the season.

The Huskies scored once in the first period and added one more in the third.

Pronghorns goaltender Alicia Anderson made 29 saves in the loss.

The Horns look for the split tonight at 6 p.m.
