Disclosure delays murder trial

TWO MEN CHARGED WITH SECOND-DEGREE MURDER

- Delon Shurtz LETHBRIDGE HERALD

Two men charged in relation to the city’s second and last murder of 2017 made brief appearances in Lethbridge provincial court Friday.

Simon Danny Scout and Rylan James Twigg both appeared by closed-circuit TV from the Lethbridge Correctional Centre, where they have been remanded since their arrest in November of last year.

An agent for Simon’s lawyer told court Friday that a binder full of disclosure had only recently been received and counsel needs more time to review it. Twigg’s lawyer, who had previously received some information about the case from the Crown’s office, said she was waiting for a “second wave” of disclosure.

Both matters have been adjourned for a month.

Twigg, 23, and 19-year-old Simon Danny Scout are charged with second-degree murder in connection to Kenrick Leonard First Rider's death Nov. 27 in his northside home.

At 7:20 a.m. that day Lethbridge EMS were called to a home in the 1200 block of 9 Avenue North, where they found First Rider’s body. Police determined First Rider had been involved in a verbal dispute with two men at the home. The dispute escalated to a physical altercation in which First Rider was killed.

Twigg was arrested the same day when he went to the police station in connection with First Rider’s death. Scout was arrested later in the day after a warrant was issued and police received some tips from the public.

Police reported that Twigg is the son of the victim’s girlfriend, and that First Rider and both accused were living together in the same house. Police had been called to the home for disturbances in the past.
