Scheidegger qualifies in B event

- LETHBRIDGE HERALD — MEDICINE HAT

Lethbridge’s Casey Scheidegger rink captured the B event qualifying spot at the 2018 Jiffy Lube Alberta Scotties Tournament of Hearts on Friday at the Medicine Hat Curling Club.

Scheidegger and her rink of third Carey-Anne McTaggart, second Jessie Scheidegger and lead Kristie Moore avenged an earlier loss to Val Sweeting of Edmonton with a 5-4 victory in the B event final.

Scheidegger built a 9-5 lead over Sweeting with three in the eighth end, then had to hold off Sweeting, who cracked a deuce in the ninth and stole another in the 10th only to come up a point short.

Scheidegger advanced to the B event final by edging former Lethbridge curler and Olympic bronze medallist Shannon Kleibrink of Okotoks 5-4 earlier in the day, scoring the winning point in the 10th end with the hammer.

Scheidegger joins Chelsea Carey of Calgary, the A event qualifier, in the Championship event. The two rinks will tangle tonight at 6:30 with the winner advancing to Sunday’s 4:30 p.m. final and the loser dropping to play the winner of the C event qualifier Sunday at 10:30 a.m. in the Championship semifinal.

In other B event play Friday it was Sweeting over Delia DeJong of Sexsmith 73.

In C event play, Lethbridge’s Jodi Marthaller, curling with Jody McNabb, Nicole Larson and Valerie Ekelund, was eliminated by Nadine Scotland of Calgary 9-7.

Laura Crocker of Edmonton, with Taylor McDonald of Lethbridge playing second, downed Amanda Craigie of Calgary 8-3 then edged Nadine Scotland of Calgary 6-5.

Geri-Lynn Ramsay of Calgary topped Jessie Hunkin of Edmonton 12-8; Kleibrink defeated Marla Sherrer of Lacombe 6-2; and DeJong edged Ramsay 7-6 in 11 ends.

In C event qualifying play today, DeJong and Kleibrink will play for the third qualifier and Crocker and Sweeting meet for the fourth qualifier at 1 p.m.

The winners of those two games will play tonight at 6:30 p.m. with the winner advancing to meet the loser of Carey and Scheidegger Sunday at 10:30 a.m.
