Cougars take two from Horns

The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns men’s and women’s hockey teams were each dealt a tough loss during Canada West play Friday night.

In the women’s game at Nicholas Sheran Arena, the Horns were edged 3-2 by the Mount Royal University Cougars, while in Calgary the Cougars defeated the Pronghorns 5-3.

In the women’s game, Kyra Greig and Brett Campbell gave the Horns a 2-1 lead after the first period, but a pair of Mount Royal goals in the second — the game-winner coming on the power play — was enough to earn the visitors the win as Lethbridge falls to 3-12-22.

Alli Borrow drew assists on both Pronghorns goals as Alicia Anderson made 23 saves.

The win improves the Cougars to 5-11-3-0 and moves them past the Calgary Dinos and into fourth in the Canada West.

The Pronghorns are six points out of the final playoff spot.

In Calgary, the Cougars, took the lead four times in the back-and-forth affair before staying ahead for their third win in a row while the Horns men are 8-10-1.

Ryan Chynoweth scored in the first period for the Pronghorns as the teams skated into the first intermissi­on tied at 1-1.

Ryon Moser knotted the game at 2-2 2:32 into the second, but the Cougars scored midway through the period for a 3-2 lead heading into the third.

Horns Russell Maxwell scored 8:10 into the third to make it 3-3, but Mount Royal’s Tanner Olstad struck on the power play a little over three minutes later before the Cougars added an empty-netter with 37 seconds to go.

Spenser Jensen had two assists for the Pronghorns while goaltender Garret Hughson stopped 20 of 24 shots. The loss puts the Pronghorns in sixth place. The teams are back at it tonight. The women are in Calgary for the rematch at 7 p.m., while the men head to Nicholas Sheran Arena at 7 p.m.
