Cougars get past Horns in OT

The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns men’s hockey team came away with a point during a home-and-home weekend.

The Pronghorns battled the Mount Royal Cougars to overtime during Canada West action Saturday night at Nicholas Sheran Arena before the visitors prevailed in the extra session for the 2-1 win for a 2-0 weekend after a 5-3 win over the Horns Friday night in Calgary.

The Pronghorns record is now 8-10-2, three points behind the Cougars and UBC Thunderbir­ds.

On Saturday, the teams skated through two scoreless periods before the Cougars took a 1-0 lead 12:57 into the third.

But with time winding down, Justin Valentino forced overtime with 4:46 remaining.

The Cougars netted the game-winner late in overtime when Luke Simpson scored 4:22 into overtime. Former Lethbridge Hurricane defenceman Kord Pankewicz drew the assist on the gamewinner.

Pronghorns goaltender Garret Hughson faced 42 shots on the night.

In women’s play in Calgary Saturday night, the Horns were on the receiving end of another one-goal loss as the Cougars posted a 2-1 win.

Mount Royal took a 20 lead after the first period, but the Pronghorns cut the lead to one in the second period on a power play goal from Alli Borrow with 2:10 left in the period.

Jessica Lohues made 29 saves in goal for the Pronghorns.

The Pronghorns are 313-2-2, eight points back of the Regina Cougars for the final playoff spot.

The Horns men’s team heads to the coast this weekend when they travel to Vancouver to take on the UBC Thunderbir­ds.

The women’s team are at home this weekend as they host UBC at Nicholas Sheran Arena Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 3 p.m.
