Cardston boys basketball team remains atop SAHSBL standings

The Cardston Cougars varsity boys basktball team remain atop the Southern Alberta High School Basketball League thanks to a 2-0 weekend.

The Cougars downed the Magrath Zeniths 86-78 Saturday night in Magrath to improve to 5-0 on the season.

The win comes one night after the Cougars downed the Winston Churchill Bulldogs 9866 to begin a weekend of unbeaten basketball.

The Raymond Comets varsity boys basketball team kept pace in the race for first place in the league with the Cougars.

The Comets defeated the Bulldogs 104-99 Saturday at Winston Churchhill to improve to 4-1 on the season.

On Saturday, Cardston was paced by Taylor Barfuss and Ty Lewis’ 25-point nights, while teammate Tristan Infanti added 13.

Paycen Blackmore replied with 27 points for the Zeniths and Taylor Cook hit for 24. Mason Cook had 16 points for Cardston and Sam Payne put up 11.

In the junior varsity game Cardston won 72-53.

Mike Olsen had a 15-point outing for Cardston. Mitch Olsen and Kody Janisko had 12 and 10 points, respective­ly.

For Magrath, Taylor Harker and Jaxon Gruninger each had 10 points.

In Friday’s win over Winston Churchill, Barfuss had 19 points for Cardston and Bryn Nelson and Lewis each added 16. Infanti put up 10 points for the Cougars.

For Winston Churchill, Raphael Hogan had a 13-point outing and Azimi scored 12. Greenwood contribute­d with 11 points for the Bulldogs.

Cardston won the junior varsity 87-44.

Mitch Olsen led Cardston with 20 points and Tyler Berry added 14.

Dennon Jensen added 13 points and Mike Olsen put up 12.

Tie Dewacht and Kevin Davies led the Bulldogs with 12 points and Tyreese Russell scored 11.

In the Comets win at Winston Churchill Saturday, Raymond was led by Jeter Heggie’s 28 points, while Garrett Hasegawa and Parker Graves each added 24.

Isaac Greenwood paced the Bulldogs with 23 points.

Chase Cockerill hit for 18 points, Ali Azimi and Sean Adams each scored 14 and Cian Cailao had 13.

In the junior varsity game, Bulldogs posted an 81-79 win as Kevin Davies had a 31-point game for Winston Churchill.

Polo Los Banos added 14 points for the Bulldogs and Tie Dewatcht scored 12.

Jaxon West put up 24 points for Raymond. Clayton Russell and Liam Davison scored 19 and 16 points, respective­ly, for the Comets.

In other action Saturday, the LCI Rams beat the Catholic Central Cougars 88-75 at Catholic Central to improve to 3-2.

Leading the Rams was John Evans with 27 points. Jack FoxGrey and Lucas Knitel-Althen each scored 11 points for LCI and Isaiah Bagnah hit for 10.

For the Cougars, C.J. Hirsche had 25 points, Nate Moreira scored 17 and Shae Gibb drained 16.

LCI won the junior varsity game 86-39 as Garrett Procee led the way with 13 points and Tyler Oliver had 12.

Cole Maryancik had 10 points for Catholic Central.

The Comets also had a 2-0 weekend thanks to a 120-92 win over Catholic Central Friday in Raymond.

Brady Baines led the Comets with 28 points and Graves also topped the 20-point mark with 22.

Hasegawa and Drake Still had 19 and 17 points, respective­ly.

Gibb had 32 points for Winston Churchill, Moreira added 17 and Hirsche had 15.

Raymond won the junior varsity game 97-65 as West led the way with 23 points.

Clayton Russell hit for 19 points for the Comets, Hayden Greep scored 15, Davison had 13 and Chase Heggie hit for 12.

Daniel Marcic topped Catholic Central scorers with 16 points. Fernando Vega scored 14 for the Cougars.

In other Friday night play, the Zeniths posted a 71-69 road win over the Rams as Taylor Cook had a 23-point game for Magrath and Paycen Blackmore had 21.

Mason Stock put up 17 points for Magrath.

For LCI, Evans led the way with 19 points and Bagnah added 14, while Derek McNabb put up 11.

The Rams won the junior varsity game 85-47 on the strength of Garrett Procee’s 34point evening.

Tanner French added 13 points for LCI.

Levi Gruninger and Kobe Thompson each had seven points for the Zeniths.
