Copperhead­s pick up big four points

The Coaldale Copperhead­s put up a twowin weekend and took down the top team in the South Division as well.

The Copperhead­s downed the Heritage Junior Hockey League South Division leading High River Flyers 5-2 Saturday night at the Coaldale Sportsplex.

The win came 24 hours after a 7-3 road win over the Medicine Hat Cubs Friday night.

With the wins the Copperhead­s are now 17-9-2 and tied for third place in the South Division with the Okotoks Bisons (17-9-2), one point behind the Flyers (1711-3) and the Cochrane Generals (18-11-1), who are tied for first.

On Saturday night, the Copperhead­s shelled the Flyers with 59 shots as Chase Williamson, Brandyn Howg, Jayden Smith, Brandon Langridge and Sam Paskuski scored for Coaldale.

Levi Anderson added two assists in the win.

At the other end, Andrew Suriano stopped 24 of 26 shots.

In Friday’s win in Medicine Hat, the Copperhead­s fell behind 2-0 before beginning their comeback with two goals in the first and second periods and three more in the third as Jayden Bexte led the charge with a hat trick.

Isiah Day Chief, Paskuski, Tyler Anderson and Levi Anderson added singles for Coaldale.

Tyler Anderson, Levi Anderson and Paskuski each added two assists for a three-point outing and the Copperhead­s went 2-for-4 on the power play.

Suriano made 32 saves in the win.

The Copperhead­s hit the road for three games, starting Saturday when they head to Three Hills to take on the Thrashers before travelling to Strathmore Sunday to play the Wheatland Kings.

Coaldale is in Okotoks Jan. 26 and returns home to the Coaldale Sportsplex Jan. 27 when the Cubs pay a visit at 8:30 p.m.

The game is the third-last remaining home game. Season ticket holders are reminded to use their regular season tickets, which are not valid for playoffs.
