The Lethbridge midget AA Hurricanes returned home as tournament gold medallists.

The Hurricanes headed to Regina for the Fred Mcbeth AA Midget Tournament and became the first Lethbridge team to win the event.

In the gold medal game, the Canes beat the Warman Wildcats — 17-1 in their league play — 4-2 to earn the title.

The last Alberta teams to win at the Fred Mcbeth AA Midget Tournament was Strathcona in 1999 and Calgary in 1992.

The Hurricanes started the tournament with a 6-2 win. Dylan Stevenson scored twice and added three assists, while Griffen Fraser scored twice and added an assist.

Brett Harper and Spencer Kennedy added singles for Lethbridge.

Aaron Dekok was in goal for the win.

The Hurricanes earned another 6-2 win Saturday, downing the Saskatoon Screaming Eagles as Zach Trempner, Fraser, Kennedy, T.J. Johnson, Ethan Merriman and Darrick Nicol scored for Lethbridge.

Sean Park was in goal for Lethbridge.

On Saturday the Hurricanes skated to a 2-2 tie with the Unity Lazers as Kennedy and Fraser scored for Lethbridge.

Their 2-0-1 record put the Hurricanes in the semifinal against North East Sunday morning.

Lethbridge earned their trip to the gold medal game with a 3-1 win. T.J. Jonson, Stevenson and Trempner scored for Lethbridge, while Dekok was in goal.

In the gold medal game against the Wildcats, Fraser scored twice and Trempner added another before Tyson Meier salted the win with an emptynette­r with 19 seconds remaining. Dekok was in goal for the gold medal game.

The Hurricanes are back in league play this weekend when they host the Okotoks Oilers on Friday at 7 p.m. at Henderson Arena.

The team heads to Nanton Saturday to take on the Foothills Bisons.
