Overwater gets AOW honour

A record-breaking game has landed Zac Overwater the Two Guys and a Pizza Place Pronghorn Male Athlete of the Week honour.

Following a 49-point night in the Horns 106-101 overtime win over the UBC Thunderbir­ds Saturday night at the 1st Choice Savings Centre, the fourth-year member of the Pronghorns basketball was a slam dunk for this week’s male athlete nod.

Joining him is fellow basketball player Amy Mazutinec with the Female Athlete of the Week award.

On Saturday night against the T-birds, Overwater set a school record for points in a key win. His 49 points broke the program’s mark of 43 points that was shared by Perry Mirkovich, Al Chapple and Danny Balderson.

Overwater completed the double-double, grabbing 12 rebounds and also added four assists, three steals and a block in the win.

On Friday night, the product of Didsbury posted 15 points, five rebounds, plus an assist, steal and block for a 64-point weekend.

This season, Overwater is second on the Pronghorns in scoring, averaging 17.6 points per game to go along with 7.3 rebounds.

A first-year wing, Mazutinec totalled 25 points, 15 rebounds, three steals and three blocks in the Pronghorns two losses to UBC this past weekend.

On Friday night, the native of Stirling posted her third double-double of the season in the Pronghorns close 65-63 loss to the T-Birds, picking up 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting, including both of her threepoint attempts. Mazutinec picked up 10 rebounds to complete the double-double, to go along with one steal and two blocks.

On Saturday, Mazutinec scored a team-high 11 points and grabbed another five rebounds, two steals and a block in the Pronghorns 7665 loss.

On the season, she is averaging 8.3 points and 5.9 rebounds per game.

The Pronghorns have a bye this week and return Jan. 25 to host the 9-5 Calgary Dinos at the 1st Choice Savings Centre.
