Golden Hawks off to John Reid Memorial Tournament

As they get ready for the John Reid Memorial Tournament this weekend in St. Albert, the Lethbridge Val Matteotti bantam AAA Golden Hawks earned a decisive league win last weekend.

The Golden Hawks downed the Medicine Hat Southeast Tigers 8-1 in Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League play Sunday at Nicholas Sheran Arena to up their winning streak to five games.

The win also improves the Golden Hawks to 16-7-4 for third place in the Ram South Division, one point behind the 17-7-3 Red Deer Rebels and seven points back of the first-place Airdrie Xtreme (19-3-5).

On Sunday, the Golden Hawks blew open a scoreless first period with four goals each in the second and third periods en route to the win as the hosts got goals from eight different players.

Teigen Parenteau, Rylan Bruns, Carson Haynes and Nathan Bohmer scored in the second period for the Golden Hawks and Syprus Ives, Bill Houenagnon, Logan Christie and Colin McLeod added the third-period goals. Haynes added two assists for three points, Nolan Price had three assists for Lethbridge. Conner Furukawa, Colby Garner and each had two.

Parenteau, Houenagnon, Christie and Bruns each had an assist for two points. Erick Roest made 21 saves in the win. The Golden Hawks kick off the John Reid Memorial Tournament Thursday when they play Delta Wild Prep Green at 8 a.m.

They play again at 4:15 p.m. against OHA Edmonton.

The Golden Hawks return to AMBHL play Jan. 24 when they head to Medicine Hat to face the Tigers.
