Canes drop overtime decision

- Dale Woodard LETHBRIDGE HERALD

They pushed it to an entertaining overtime, but the Lethbridge Hurricanes’ fourgame winning streak has come to an end.

The Hurricanes were edged 4-3 by the Kelowna Rockets in Western Hockey League action Wednesday night in Kelowna.

Hurricanes forward Taylor Ross continued to wield a hot hand, scoring the game-tying goal with 7:33 left in the game to force overtime as Lethbridge rallied from a 3-1 deficit.

With Rockets defenceman and captain Cal Foote watching from the penalty box to start overtime with a delay of game call with two seconds left in regulation, Hurricanes forwards Brad Morrison and Jordy Bellerive each rang shots off the post on the ensuing four-on-three power play before Foote got out of the box and ended the overtime session with 2:05 left.

The overtime loss puts the Canes at 21-19-4-0, but gives them at least one point in their past five games.

Like they did Tuesday night in Kamloops against the Blazers, the Hurricanes struck early as Bellerive gave Lethbridge a 1-0 lead 42 seconds in with his 26th of the season as WHL Player of the Week Dylan Cozens drew an assist to increase his points streak to five games.

The Rockets drew even shortly after as Dillon Dube knotted things 8:08 into the first and went up 2-1 4:05 into the second on a goal from Kole Lind.

The Hurricanes went on the power play when Rocket Braydyn Chizen was called for delay of game, but it was Kelowna who went up 3-1 on a shorthanded goal from Conner Bruggen-Cate at 8:52 of the second.

Lethbridge pulled to within one with a little over six minutes left in the second period as defenceman Tate Olson scored his first of the season and first as a Hurricane to make it 3-2.

Ross and Cozens continued to put up the points and the Canes pulled even with 7:33 remaining when Ross scored his 14th of the season that Cozens drew an assist on for his 12th point in the past five games.

Lethbridge goaltender Reece Klassen stopped 33 of 37 shots and earned second star honours.

The Hurricanes road trip continues Friday and Saturday when the team heads to Prince George to take on the Cougars twice.
