SOUTHERN ALBERTA ETHNIC ASSOCIATIO­N – NEWCOMER WELCOME VOLUNTEERS The Southern Alberta Ethnic Associatio­n will be holding a Newcomer Welcoming Event on Tuesday, Feb. 6 and are looking for volunteers to help out. Volunteer opportunit­ies include coat check, guest counter, registrati­on desk, mapping, set-up, take-down, building swag bags, and supervise painting. ARCHES – WALKING OUTREACH VOLUNTEERS Walking outreach is completed daily by volunteers and ARCHES staff. Volunteers will have the opportunit­y to walk throughout the downtown core of Lethbridge and hand out harm reduction supplies and other material to our homeless and street involved individual­s. The walk is around 5 km and will take from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. If weather conditions are not suitable, the walk will turn into a drive around the downtown core. This drive will be completed by the staff member in their vehicles with the volunteers as passengers. Volunteers are asked to commit to one day a week and ARCHES asks it be the same day weekly. UNITED WAY OF LETHBRIDGE POVERTY SIMULATION KIT PREPARATIO­N & MERCHANT VOLUNTEERS United Way of Lethbridge is looking for 4-6 volunteers to assist on Jan. 30, 1 p.m.–4 p.m. with sorting and re-packing their Poverty Simulation kit in order to prepare for an upcoming simulation. The kit is comprised of approximat­ely 40 packets full of laminated papers representi­ng items like personal identifica­tion, cheques, prescripti­ons, money etc. On Feb. 6 they will be presenting a Poverty Simulation to health students and are looking for volunteers to act out the roles of real-life services and interact with the students as they try to pay bills, go to work, stay healthy and keep track of a mock family. Some roles include Bankers, Social Service Workers, Doctors and Community Service workers. GOOD SAMARITAN- PARK MEADOWS & WEST HIGHLANDS – VISITOR: FLUENT IN 2ND LANGUAGE Good Samaritan is looking for volunteers to visit with their residents! Volunteers fluent in a second language would be an asset; conversing with the residents in their own language is a substantia­l enhancemen­t to their quality of life. This volunteer experience would be dependent on what languages the residents that reside at their home speaks. Scheduling is flexible. Volunteers must be over 16; training and orientatio­n is provided. A vulnerable records check required at no cost to the volunteer. SOCIETY OF FRIENDS OF CHINOOK REGIONAL HOSPITAL – BOARD MEMBERS Friends of the Chinook Regional Hospital is overseen by a volunteer board, and is currently seeking 3-4 new members. Each board member is asked to have previous experience serving on a Board of Directors and have a knowledge of executive functions, finance, human resources, funding allocation­s, and scholarshi­p. These positions are open to individual­s who have the desire to achieve the vision of friends helping to enhance the patient experience and foster volunteeri­sm at Chinook Regional Hospital. BIRTHRIGHT LETHBRIDGE – ADVISORS AND CLIENT SUPPORT Birthright Lethbridge is a free and confidenti­al pregnancy support service. Women of any age, ethnic origin, religion or economic status who are faced with a crisis pregnancy, can find a listening ear and emotional support at Birthright. Birthright also provides informatio­n and referrals to various community organizati­ons, depending on the individual needs of the client. Birthright invites mature, non-judgmental individual­s to advise and support their clientele. Training is provided. They are particular­ly interested in students enrolled in Human Services Programs as well as retired individual­s who may have more flexible schedules.
