Scheidegger rink gets special endorsement

- Dale Woodard LETHBRIDGE HERALD

Now that’s a glowing endorsement — sort of.

Lethbridge’s Casey Scheidegger and her rink of third Carey-Anne McTaggart, second Jessie Scheidegger and lead Kristie Moore are in Penticton, B.C. representing Alberta at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts.

Back home at the Lethbridge Curling Club, the foursome has a signature barbeque sauce bearing their name that local curling fans can sample for a good cause.

Wanting to commemmorate the Scheidegger’s berth at this year’s Scotties Tournament of Hearts, Ryan Ikebuchi, owner and operator of JRRR BBQ in High River, has created The Team Scheidegger Alberta 2018 Gold Sauce.

Now, local fans gathering at the Lethbridge Curling Club to cheer on Scheidegger can enjoy the exclusive sauce on their Scheidegger BBQ Burger with proceeds from sales of the sauce going to the Sandra Schmirler Foundation.

After watching Scheidegger capture the Alberta Scotties title earlier this month to earn a berth at nationals, Ikebuchi knew it was time to make the commemorative sauce.

“It’s a signature sauce that really represents the team because it’s sweet and spicy and it has that kick,” said Ikebuchi. “I thought I could make a variation of my mustard sauce and turn it into a gold sauce. Very few southern-style barbeque companies have a gold sauce. But I knew that working with their number-one supplier, the Highwood Distillers White Owl Whiskey, that I would get the undertones I really wanted to achieve the sauce.

“It’s got everything I wanted out of it and we’re really proud of what we’ve created. But it’s not so much what we’ve created, it’s more about what it’s doing and it’s purpose.”

Ikebuchi said he hopes to sell between 300 and 600 bottles of The Team Scheidegger Alberta 2018 Gold Sauce.

“We just dropped off our first 50 bottles to the Lethbridge Curling Club. We have support from the Curlers Corner at the Calgary Curling Club and we’re supporting everywhere else in between. If anybody needs them for local delivery we’ll just take them a bottle.”

The Vulcan Curling Club has also asked for 24 bottles, said Ikebuch, adding it’s still up in the air if the sauce will continue to be sold after the Scotties.

“So we’re getting support from a lot of different places.”
