Cardston, Raymond remain undefeated

The Cardston Cougars boys and the Raymond Comets girls basketball teams remain unbeaten in Southern Alberta High School Basketball League action.

In boys play Saturday in Cardston, the Cougars topped the LCI Rams 95-61 to improve to 9-0 on the season, while the Comets defeated the Magrath Pandas 68-59 in Magrath and now lead the girls standings at 6-0.

In Cardston, Taylor Barfuss was the top Cougars point-getter with 24, while Adyn Card and Ty Lewis each added 14. Tristan Infanti and Ben Atwood scored 13 and 12 points, respective­ly, for the Cougars.

John Evans topped LCI scorers with a 23point night. Derek McNabb and Isaiah Bagnah each scored 11 points for the Rams.

In the junior varsity game, the Cougars defeated the Rams 95-80 as Mike Olsen drained 23 points and Mitch Olsen followed with 21.

Dennon Jensen put up 13 points for Cardston and Britain Scott had 12.

Tanner French led the Rams with 18 points. Four other LCI players also hit double digits as Marshall Scott (16), Carter Johnson (12), Garrett Procee (11) and Cade Francis (10) helped push the Rams to 80 points.

In the girls game at Magrath, Lyvia Jensen led the Comets with 17 points. Kansas Long added 14 points and Ivy Jensen put up 10.

Lauren Payne paced the Pandas with 18 points and teammate Adi Strong was one behind with 17.

The Comets won the junior varsity game 5554.

Taylor Graves and Haely Lamontagne each had 11 points for Raymond and Rees Armener added 10.

For Magrath, Lucy Wilde led the way with 16 points. Elley Johnson and Hannah Barfuss each scored 14 points for the Pandas.

In other boys action Saturday, the Magrath Zeniths took over sole possession of second place in the SAHSBL and improved to 6-1 win a 100-39 win over the Chinook Coyotes at Magrath.

Leading the Zeniths was Paycen Blackmore with a 21-point night.

Sam Payne chipped in with 19 points for Magrath, while Taylor Harker and Mason Stock each scored 14. Taylor Cook scored 10 points. Liam Doyle led the Coyotes with 13 points. Chinook won the junior varsity game 81-72 on a 21-point outing from Karson Valgardson. Mason Harris and Doyle had 11 and 10 points, respective­ly, for the Coyotes.

“We had control of the whole entire game,” said Einarson, adding they kept it clean throughout the last end.“

The skip from the East St. Paul Curling Club said it was a strange feeling not being sure if she would be competing at the Scotties.

“It's so weird. Playing that game against Chelsea it's like, 'Oh my gosh. This is do or die. You are in it or you are not.' To get that second chance is huge.”

Saskatchew­an's Sherry Anderson scored four in the ninth end to beat Kerry Galusha of the Northwest Territorie­s 8-4 and New Brunswick's Sylvie S. Robichaud had a deuce in the 10th to get past Northern Ontario's Tracy Fleury 8-5.

The top four teams from each pool advance to the championsh­ip round.
