Dinos get past the Horns

- Dale Woodard LETHBRIDGE HERALD

Despite throwing the shackles on their opponents early, the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns women’s basketball team was unable to hold off the Calgary Dinos.

The Pronghorns were defeated 6753 by the Dinos during Canada West play Saturday night in Calgary.

The loss is the Horns sixth in a row and puts the team at 10-8 on the season, but with a University of Fraser Valley Cascades loss Saturday, the Pronghorns clinch a spot in the post-season.

Early in Saturday’s game, it looked like the Horns were poised to clinch their first win of 2018 as they held the Dinos to a mere three points in the first quarter and led 8-3.

But the Dinos outscored the Horns in each of the final three quarters in a loss in which Lethbridge played without Kacie Bosch, who sat out due to concussion protocol.

Pronghorns head coach Dave Adams credited his team for filling the void left by Bosch — the Horns second-leading scorer averaging 11.8 points-per-game — in Saturday’s setback.

“The team stepped up big playing without Kacie tonight,” said Adams. “I really liked the step forward heading into the last week of the regular season and playoffs.”

The Dinos won the weekendopener over the Pronghorns 77-45 Thursday night at the 1st Choice Savings Centre.

“A much better game on the road tonight,” said Adams. “We found good defensive energy and positive team chemstry on both ends of the floor.”

Danielle Fritzke led the Pronghorns with 15 points, while Katie Keith and Jessica Zarowny each hit for eight. Zarowny also grabbed eight rebounds and Keith had four steals.

In the men’s game, the Pronghorns were denied the weekend sweep as the Dinos regroup in the rematch for a 97-71 win.

The Dinos held a 48-36 lead at the half and kept a 10-point advantage for the opening minutes of the third quarter before going on a 22-3 run to pad their lead.

With the loss the Pronghorns are 12-6 and remain in fourth place in the Canada West, four points behind the Dinos and four points head of the Victoria Vikes.

Zac Overwater drained 15 points for the Pronghorns in the loss. Saren Westrop and Awak Piom added 12 each.

Piom and Colton Gibb each had six boards and Brett Warren and Kyle Peterson put up four assists each.

The Pronghorns men’s and women’s hockey teams were defeated by the Alberta Golden Bears and Pandas Saturday night.

In the men’s game at Nicholas Sheran Arena, the Horns lost 9-2 to the Golden Bears as the visitors scored three times in each period on their way to the win that drops Lethbridge to 8-13-3.

The loss is also the Pronghorns sixth straight and allows the Dinos — who won both their games last weekend — to pull into a tie with Lethbridge for the sixth-and-final playoff spot in the Canada West.

Dalton Sward and Torrin White — both on the power play — scored for the Pronghorns Saturday.

In goal, Ty Edmonds faced 33 shots for the Horns.

In the women’s game in Edmonton, the Pronghorns were blanked in a close 1-0 loss to the Pandas.

With the loss, the Horns are 3-16-2-3.

After a mostly scoreless game, Alberta’s Alexandra Poznikoff netted the sole goal of the game midway through the
