Polar Plunge raises $34,000 for Special Olympics Alberta

- LETHBRIDGE HERALD

Saturday’s cold didn’t turn away 100 people from jumping into Henderson Lake.

In the process, those brave polar plungers raised $34,000 for Special Olympics Alberta.

“Thank you to all our plungers,” said Johnny Byrne, president and CEO of Special Olympics Alberta, in a news release Monday.

“We are blown away from the support of all the participants who dare to jump in a frozen lake to support over 3,300 Special Olympics athletes across our province. We want our Polar Plunge season to have 1,000 plungers and break our record from last year of 650 plungers throughout the province.”

Polar Plunge has been presented by the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Alberta for more than seven years, with 10 law enforcement agencies, personnel and volunteers helping to put it on.

Participating law enforcement agencies in Lethbridge were: Taber Police Service, Lethbridge Police Service, RCMP, Blood Tribe Police Service, Alberta Corrections, Alberta Sheriffs and the Canadian Armed Forces.
