Copperheads still winning

- LETHBRIDGE HERALD

Seven wins and an overtime loss this month have vaulted the Coaldale Copperheads into first place in the Heritage Junior Hockey League Southern Division.

The Copperheads won twice on the weekend, 6-3 in Okotoks on Friday, before returning home and earning a 3-2 overtime win over the Medicine Hat Cubs.

The wins move the Copperheads to 21-9-2 and into a tie with the Bisons for first in the South, but Coaldale has one game in hand.

The wins also put the Copperheads up three points on the Cochrane Generals (2011-1).

In Okotoks, the Copperheads scored three unanswered goals midway through the third to take the lead as Levi Anderson scored on the power play and Calvin Swanson and Mike Williamson — into an empty net — rounded out the scoring.

Jedd Horvath, Isiah Day Chief and deadline addition Ty Abbott netted the first three Coaldale goals. Levi Anderson and Abbott added an assist for two points and Jayden Smith had two helpers

Nolan Berner made 39 saves in the win.

Ty Anderson scored the overtime winner in Saturday’s game against the Cubs, while Horvath and Chase Williamson were the regulation goal scorers. Horvath and Williamson also had assists.

Andrew Suriano had a 15save night.

The Copperheads are back at the Coaldale Sportsplex Saturday in a first-place showdown with the Bisons at 8:30 p.m. Their final home game is Feb. 10 against Strathmore.

Fans are reminded to use their tickets for the final two regular season games. Regular season tickets are not valid for playoffs.
