United Way accepting applications for funding
With help from the United Way, Lethbridge-area people have supported 33 local organizations in the last few years. But more agencies can apply, officials point out. As preparations for this year’s campaign begin, the long-serving Lethbridge agency is inviting applications from other “human services organizations” across the region.
They’re asked to submit their request by March 29, alongside groups and programs that have already received funds through the United Way.
Connolly Tate-Mitchell, the United Way’s communications co-ordinator, says the criteria are straightforward: proposed programs “will align with United Way’s vision of alleviating poverty; building healthy, inclusive communities; or encouraging positive child and youth development.”
“Collectively, the programs funded by United Way and its community donors help thousands of people each year,” she says.
That help isn’t restricted to people who live in or near the city, officials point out. Taber, Fort Macleod, Crowsnest Pass and Claresholm agencies were among those who benefitted through the 2017 campaign, along with organizations like the Red Cross and the St. John Ambulance which serve the entire region.
One of more than 100 United Way organizations across Canada, the United Way of Lethbridge and South Western Alberta seeks to “work to identify the causes of the most significant local issues, and develop strategies to address them.”
To ensure donors’ dollars go where they’re most needed, the United Way recruits a team of community volunteers to help review and evaluate all agencies’ requests. Those who’d like to help with that job this year are asked to call 403-327-1700 for more information.
