Horns go 3-3 in rugby sevens

After opening with three straight wins at the second stop on the Canada West sevens series, the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns women’s rugby seven team closed with a trio of losses Sunday in Abbotsford, B.C.

The Horns were defeated 19-10 by the Calgary Dinos in their opening game Sunday and lost 27-5 to the Alberta Pandas in their second game and 21-19 to the Victoria Vikes to complete the weekend.

The 3-3 weekend puts the Pronghorns at 8-4 and in third place in the overall standings after two stops in the series, two points back of the Dinos and eight points behind Victoria.

On the opening day Saturday, the Pronghorns started with a 15-7 win over the UBC Thunderbirds and followed with a 24-7 win over the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades and a 57-0 shutout of the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack.

On Sunday, against the Dinos, Hailey Driscoll ran for both Pronghorns tries for a 1010 tie at the half before Calgary added two more tries in the second half for the win.

In the loss to the Pandas, Hannah Lopez scored late as Lethbridge avoided a shutout loss.

The Vikes opened a 21-0 lead over the Pronghorns in the final game of the weekend. The Horns rallied in the second half with tries from Carolyn McKee, Abby Neudorf and Lopez, but fell just short in their comeback bid.

Caitlin Sears and Lopez each added a convert in the loss.

On Saturday, the Pronghorns began the weekend with a win over the Thunderbirds as Lopez scored two tries and McKee scored the other.

In the win over the Cascades, Genna Wright hit for two tries and Brittany Orr and McKee added others.

Orr converted her own try and Sears hit for another convert.

In the 57-0 win over Thompson Rivers — the newest Canada West rugby sevens team — McKee scored four consecutive tries in the first half and Myranda Falardeau ran for two in the second half. Sydney De La Mare, Hailey Driscol and Erin McFadden scored once each.

Sears kicked five converts and Orr put up one.

The final stop on the Canada West sevens series will be hosted by Victoria Feb. 2425, where an overall champion will be crowned.
