Horns continue prep for championships
With the Canada West championships around the corner, members of the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns track and field team used the weekend to move up the Canada West and U SPORTS rankings.
The Horns headed to Edmonton for the Panda Open for one more meet before the Canada West championships Feb. 23-24, hosted by the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg.
Freshman Pronghorns thrower Andreas Troschke set a personal best in the weight throw with a distance of 16.91 metres to take over first place in the Canada West over teammate Ben Ingvaldson and second in the national rankings.
Ingvaldson was second in the weight throw with 16.34 metres and was first in the shot put with a toss of 15.60 metres to sit first in the Canada West and second nationally.
He is also ranked second in Canada West in the weight throw and third in U SPORTS.
Aaron Hernandez remained undefeated in the triple jump, winning the Panda Open with a jump of 15.21 metres.
He heads into the Canada West championships ranked first in both Canada West and U SPORTS.
Freshman Noel Vanderzee finished second in the high jump with a best of 2.06 metres and is ranked second in Canada West and third nationally.
Pronghorns fifth-year hurdler Phillip Rockerbie set a personal best in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.36 seconds to take second spot and is ranked second in the conference heading in the championships.
Sandra Latrace continues to sit atop the Canada West rankings in the long jump with a distance of 5.82 metres.
That mark also has Latrace ranked second in U SPORTS.
She also won the 60m dash with a time of 7.64 seconds and is ranked second in Canada West and seventh nationally.
Lara Roth was second in the women’s weight throw with a throw of 14.87 metres. Rookie Tanessa Morris was third. Roth, Morris and teammate Madeline Szabo sit third, fourth and fifth in the Canada West rankings and eighth, ninth and 11th nationally, respectively.
Lindsay Kramers won the bronze medal in the women’s shot put, while Tanessa Morris was fifth.
Twenty Pronghorns will compete in the Canada West.
