Figure skaters ready to represent Zone 1 at games

For Brooklyn Watmough, the Alberta Winter Games represent just as much of a team aspect as an individual one.

With one Games already under her belt, the 14-year-old figure skater from the Lethbridge Skating Club speaks from experience as she glides into this year’s event starting today in Fort McMurray and running until Monday.

“You’re part of a team,” said Watmough Wednesday night at the ATB Centre, getting in one more skate before heading to Fort McMurray. “You can be for yourself, but you compete for your zone. I met a lot of nice people. It’s about going everywhere together and being a team.”

Joining Watmough in Fort McMurray are fellow LSC and Zone 1 athletes Jenna Vanderburgh and Kaylyn Mikado.

After getting her first Alberta Winter Games glimpse two years ago down the road in Medicine Hat, the three skaters trek a little farther to this year’s games.

“It’s really exciting,” said Watmough, who will skate in the Star 6 division. “Last time it was in Medicine Hat, so to get to go all the way to Fort McMurray and do it again is good. It’s so cool because you get to meet all these different athletes from all over the province. It’s a lot of fun.”

Hopefully, a podium finish beckons this year for Watmough.

“I’m hoping to go and skate my best, skate clean and maybe medal this year.”

She had her debut at the Star 6 level late last year to thank for her second appearance at the Alberta Winter Games.

“I competed in December for the first time at this level,” said Watmough. “That was the qualifier to go. I qualified and I was really excited.”
