Canes chill Ice

- Dale Woodard LETHBRIDGE HERALD

The Lethbridge Hurricanes posted a pair of wins in less than 24 hours on the weekend. The Canes downed the Kootenay Ice 4-1 during Western Hockey League action Sunday afternoon in Cranbrook as rookie goaltender Reece Klassen stopped 38 of 39 shots

That decision secures a 2-0 weekend series sweep of the Ice following a 5-2 victory over Kootenay Saturday night at the Enmax Centre and moves Lethbridge to 29-24-6-0 on the season.

The win puts the Hurricanes two points behind the Central Division-leading Medicine Hat Tigers (29-24-7-0).

However, the Canes are now glancing over their shoulder at a new team that has taken over third in the Central with the Red Deer Rebels — 8-1-1 in their past 10 games including a 4-2 win over the Vancouver Giants Sunday in Vancouver — nudging the Ice out of the third spot.

On Sunday in Cranbrook, Hurricanes captain Jordy Bellerive scored 16 seconds into the second period for his third goal of the weekend and 42nd of the season before defenceman Ty Prefontaine struck 1:50 later for a 2-0 lead.

The Ice pulled within one at the 7:37 mark of the second on a goal from Colton Veloso, but the Canes rounded out the scoring in the final 1:54 of the third period on goals from Brad Morrison and Taylor Ross.

The Hurricanes are home for their next three games, starting Wednesday night when the Prince Albert Raiders come calling at 7 p.m. at the Enmax Centre.

The Brandon Wheat Kings are up next Friday night before the WHL-leading Moose Jaw Warriors come to town Feb. 27.
