Cougars golden at Green and Gold

The Cardston Cougars struck gold at this year’s LCI Boys Green and Gold Basketball Tournament.

The Cougars completed a 3-0 weekend with a 100-84 win over the Western Canada Redhawks in the final Saturday night at LCI.

In the bronze medal game, the host Rams rebounded from a 96-91 loss to the Redbirds in the semifinals Saturday and downed the Calgary Sir Winston Churchill Bulldogs 92-88.

In the gold medal game, Cardston was led by Taylor Barfuss’ 29-point outing. Mikhail Moojalsky added 18 points, Dennon Jensen scored 15 and Ty Schaffer chipped in with 11.

Nic Casagrande led the Redhawks with 33 points.

The Cougars defeated the Bulldogs 79-73 in the semifinals Saturday afternoon.

John Evans topped the Rams point-getters in the bronze medal game with 23 points and Isaiah Bagnah topped the 20-point mark with 21.

Lucas Knitel-Althen put up 12 points for LCI and Zach Jacobs added 10.

The Chinook Coyotes were defeated 82-72 by the Holy Trinity Trojans in the consolatio­n game.

Liam Doyle had 13 points for the Coyotes and Karson Valgardson scored 12. Boe Clarkson scored 11 for Chinook. John Bucog led the Trojans with 17 points. The Coyotes started the weekend with an 8852 loss to Western Canada, but topped the Vanier College Vikings 96-85 Saturday morning to advance to the consolatio­n final.

In the seventh/eighth place game the Lacombe Composite High School Rams edged Vanier College 82-81.

Cardston’s Barfuss was named the tournament MVP.

Named to the Green and Gold First Team AllStar team were Ty Lewis (Cardston) Evans (LCI), Casagrande (Western Canada), Aidan Smith (Western Canada) and Bucog (Holy Trinity).

Named to the Second All-Star were Bagnah (LCI), Pelumi Ajayi (Sir Winston Churchill), Valgardson (Chinook), Carter McLenahan (Lacombe) and Ryan Stefanovic (Vanier College).
