Kodiaks futsal teams hit plenty of posts in Olds

They say the goal posts are a goalie’s best friend.

Last weekend, the goalie’s best friend didn’t particularily care for the Lethbridge College men’s and women’s futsal teams.

The Kodiaks hit the road to Olds for the second go-round of Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference tournament play Saturday and Sunday.

In a weekend that included a emotional game against the Keyano Huskies, the Kodiaks women’s team went 1-2 on the weekend and advanced to the semifinals.

Along with the men’s team, they also hit a lot of posts.

“I lost track of how many times we hit the post, it was unreal,” said Kodiaks head coach Sean Carey. “In six games we hit about 25 posts. We had some shifts where we hit two or three.”

The Kodiaks women started the weekend with a 4-2 win over the Augustana University Vikings, but were defeated 6-1 by the Medicine Hat Rattlers in their second game.

In their final game of the weekend against the Huskies, the Kodiaks rallied late to tie the score at 3-3 to force a shootout before Keyano prevailed.

“They went up on us 3-1 and we tied it up in the last two minutes of the game,” said Carey. “In overtime we had multiple chances, but we hit the post, which was the story of the weekend.”

Sunday’s game against Keyano was the Huskies first games since a tragic highway accident Dec. 16 that claimed the lives of two 19-year-old triplet sisters, soccer players Zara Chambers and Bridget Chambers, just south of Fort McMurray.

“It was quite an emotional game,” said Carey. “The parents and the family were there.”

On the men’s side, the Kodiaks started with a 9-5 loss to Keyano, but earned a comeback 4-3 win over the Olds Broncos.

“We were down 3-1 and we came back to beat them with four seconds left,” said Carey, adding Jimmy Bukuru added the last-second winner with 4.1 seconds to go.

The Kodiaks finished the weekend with a 5-2 loss to the SAIT Trojans.

The futsal teams are back on the road in a little less than a month when they head to Lloydminster for the ACAC championship March 9-11.
