High school basketball wraps up

A series of ties atop the standings in both the boys and girls divisions have wrapped up the Southern Alberta High School Basketball League regular season.

On the girls side, the Raymond Comets and the LCI Clippers varsity teams posted wins on the final day of the season Saturday afternoon to each finish at 11-3 and in a three-way tie for first place with the Magrath Pandas.

In the boys varsity ranks, the Magrath Zeniths and Cardston Cougars each posted wins Saturday to finish the season at 13-1 and in a two-way tie for first.

There were more deadlocks in the junior varsity standings as the Magrath Pandas and LCI Clippers tied for first at 11-3, while the Cardston Wildcats were the outright winners on the junior varsity boys side with a record of 113.

In girls varsity play Saturday, the Comets won at home and the Clippers earned the ‘W’ on the road.

Raymond hosted the Medicine Hat Kwahommies and posted an 80-67, while the Clippers headed to Taber and topped the W.R. Myers Rebels 76-52.

In Raymond, Lyvia Jensen led the way on the scoresheet for the Comets with 22 points and teammate Kansas Long put up 20.

Gracie Heggie added 12 points for Raymond.

For the Kwahommies, Hailee Parker had a 23-point game and Rhiannon Ware and Brooklyn Kaczynski chipped in with 12 and 10 points, respective­ly.

In the junior varsity game, the Comets earned a 76-62 win as Haely Lamontagne had a 19-point afternoon.

Taylor Graves scored 18 points for Raymond and Rees Armener had 14.

Janelle Stegen led Medicine Hat with 24 points and Taya Karsten had 11.

In Taber, Berkley Heggie paced the Clippers with 19 points. Krista Nelson scored 12 points for LCI and Catriona Smith and Jocelyn Neilson each put up 11.

For the Rebels, who finish at 5-9, Dani Wright had 13 points.

The Rams won the junior varsity game 51-43.

Maddi Boehme had 16 points for LCI and Renae Csurka and Kennedy Tanner each added 11.

Halle Johnson had 15 points for the 7-7 Rebels and teammate Anika Steed hit for 12.

In varsity girls play, the Cardston Cougars wrapped up the season at 10-4 thanks to a 66-43 win over the Chinook Coyotes (1-13).

Hanna Nunn scored 13 points for the Cougars and Ava Hardy had 12, while Danika Leavitt replied with 15 points for Chinook.

In junior varsity action, the Pandas defeated the Winston Churchill Griffins 69-22.

Miranda Strate had 13 points for Magrath and Lucy Wilde and Ellee Hoy each scored 12 points.

Julia Roth topped the Griffins with 10 points.

In boys varsity play Saturday, the Cardston Cougars cemented their tie atop the league with Magrath thanks to a 109-49 win over the Coyotes at Chinook.

Ty Lewis led Cardston with 23 points. Tristan Infanti (16 points), Bryn Nelson (15), Ty Schaffer (12) and Taylor Barfuss (10) also hit double digits for the Cougars.

For the Coyotes (1-13), Boe Clarkson drained 13 points.

The Wildcats boys secured top spot at 13-1 with an 87-65 win over Chinook as Mike Olsen had 18 points and Isaac Atwood and Dennon Jensen each scored 16.

Tyler Berry scored 12 points for Cardston.

The Coyotes, who finish at 11-3 were led by Karson Valgardson’s 17 points.

Magrath capped off the regular season Friday night with a 99-64 win over Winston Churchill in Magrath.

Taylor Cook had 26 points and Paycen Blackmore hit for 18.

Mason Stock had 16 points, John Jones drained 13 and Sam Payne chipped in with 10.

The Bulldogs (2-12) were led by Dorian Bertram, who had 11 points.

The Zeniths JV boys finished the season at 6-8 with an 80-51 win over the Bulldogs (4-10).

Jaxon Gruninger led the way with 17 points and Levi Gruninger had 16.

Taylor Harker and Colton Finck each had 11.

For Winston Churchill, Kevin Davies scored 19 points and Tyreese Russell added 12.

The Comets boys varsity team completed the season at 8-6 with a 90-65 win over the Medicine Hat Mohawks.

Parker Graves had 23 points for

the Comets and Jeter Heggie scored 19.

Garrett Hasegawa and Drake Still chipped in with 14 and 11 points, respective­ly.

For Medicine Hat, Eidan Jonker led the way with 13 points and Bailey Gosse had 12.

In the junior varsity game, the Comets (6-8) beat the Mohawks (311) 72-67, led by Liam Davison’s 20 points, followed by Jaxon West’s 19.

Hayden Greep added 14 points for Raymond.

Artchie Belza led Medicine Hat with 12 points, Austin Walton had 11 and Gabriel Baldovinos, Jaxon Bos and Lukas Herter each scored 10.
