Midget Canes take 2-0 series lead

The Lethbridge midget AAA Hurricanes have taken a commanding lead in their Alberta Midget Hockey League South Division semifinal series.

Zack Stringer scored the hat trick as the Hurricanes defeated the Calgary Flames 5-3 in Game 2 of the team’s best-of-five series to take a 2-0 lead.

Lethbridge went up 1-0 in the series Thurday night thanks to a 3-2 double overtime win at Nicholas Sheran Arena.

On Sunday, the Canes scored twice in the first and second periods and added one more in the third.

Lethbridge held a 2-0 lead after the first on goals by Kadyn Chabot and Zack Stringer.

Raj Sangha scored 5:37 into the second period and Stringer added his second of the game, while the Flames struck for three goals in the middle frame as Lethbridge nursed a one-goal lead into the final period.

Stringer completed his hat trick bid with the lone goal of the third to round out the scoring.

Ridly Greig had three assists in Sunday’s win. Sangha and Chabot each added an assist for two points.

Byron Fancy stopped 23 shots in the win.

The Hurricanes go for the sweep in Lethbridge Tuesday night at 7:45 p.m. at Nicholas Sheran Arena.

In the other South Divison semifinal, the Calgary Royals defeated the Red Deer Optimist Chiefs 5-3 Sunday in Calgary to take a 2-0 series lead.
