The opening day of the boys and girls 1A/2A South Zone Basketball Championsh­ip hit the court Monday at the Lethbridge College Val Matteotti Gymnasium.

1A boys Picture Butte 66, Pincher Creek St. Michael’s 57

Skylar Black led the No. 9 Sugar Kings with 23 points and Charlie McKelvey added 15 as Picture Butte opened the week with the upset win.

Ben Cooley had a 27-point night for the No. 8 Dragons and Tyler Gerber had 21. Romel Obrique chipped in with 11 points for St. Michaels.

Stirling 86, Piikani Nation 41

The fifth-ranked Lakers advanced as Orin Smith put up 21 points. Hunter Michelson scored 14 points and Ty Mazutinec had 12.

Joshua Big Sorrel Horse was No. 12 Piikani’s leading scorer with 17 points.

Noble Central Blades 75, Warner Warriors 45

Bryce Segboer led the sixth-ranked Blades with 26 points and Joe Wolff drained 13. Jake Mills added 10 points for Noble Central.

No. 11 Warner was led by Jacob Buhler’s 19-point evening.

43Foremost 70, Coaldale Christian

Reece Hollingswo­rth poured in 29 point to lead Foremost, while Ryan Unrau had 19.

Christian Slomp scored 16 in the loss for Coaldale, while Owen de Boer had 13.

1A Girls Coalhurst 65, Nanton J.T. Foster 52

JodiAnn Fester nearly hit the 30point mark with 28 and teammate SarahAnn Walker also hit double digits for No. 8 Coalhurst with 16 points.

For the No. 9 Raiders, Juleah Lorenz, Morgan Cruikshank and Makena Wright had 15, 14 and 10 points, respective­ly.

2A Girls Willow Creek 81, Crowsnest Consolidat­ed 47

Kelby Keeley scored 27 points to power Willow Creek to the victory, and Kayla Minor added 18. Emily Chartrand added 14 points and Katie Hart finished with 10.

Taya McClung scored nine to lead Crowsnest.
