Headwater Canes ride momentum into playoffs

-

The Lethbridge midget Headwater AAA 15’s Hurricanes ended their Alberta Minor Midget Hockey League regular season with two wins last weekend.

Getting geared up for the playoffs, the Hurricanes downed the Rockyview Raiders — the first-place team in the South Division — 7-2 Saturday at the ATB Centre and wrapped up the weekend with a 4-0 shutout over the Calgary CRAA Blue Royals Sunday at Nicholas Sheran Arena.

The wins give the Canes a 28-5-3 regular season and gives them second overall in the AMMHL as they get ready for the Sutter Cup provincial playdowns, starting Thursday in Okotoks against the Red Deer Chiefs.

In the win over the Raiders Saturday, Tristan Kimmen and Derrien Tonin each scored twice for Lethbridge and Brayden Kapty, Blake Kondor and Matthew Hoffart added one each. Cole Tisdale stopped 20 of 22 shots in goal. On Sunday, Brayden Peters made 24 saves to earn the shutout for his league-leading 18th win of the season and his seventh shutout of the season.

Derrien Tonin, D.J. Tonin, Kapty — on the power play — and Dawson Leroux scored for the Hurricanes.

The Hurricanes face Red Deer at noon Thursday and play the Calgary CNHA Blazers at 2 p.m. Friday.

They take on the Calgary CBHA Blackhawks Saturday at 3:30 p.m. The semifinals and finals are on Sunday. During the regular season, the Hurricanes scored 150 goals while only giving up 69 in 36 league games.
