LCI, Cardston reach JV finals

Cardston and Lethbridge Collegiate Institute will battle it out for the Southern Alberta 4A Boys and Southern Alberta Girls junior varsity championsh­ips following semifinal play on Tuesday night.

In boys’ play, host Cardston Cougars, seeded No. 1, downed the No. 4 Raymond Comets 82-51 as all 11 Cardston players hit the scoresheet.

Dennon Jensen led the winners with 15 points, followed by Britain Scott and Mitch Olsen with 12 and 11 respective­ly.

Raymond replied with 16 points from Liam Davison while Ryker Davison added 15.

Cardston will tangle with the No. 2 seed LCI Rams for the league title Saturday at noon at the 1st Choice Savings Centre at the University of Lethbridge after the Rams defeated No. 3 Chinook Coyotes 103-71 Tuesday at LCI.

Tanner French led a balanced LCI attack with 16 points while Cade Francis and Garrett Procee added 13 and 12 respective­ly. Marshall Scott, David Kindley and Tyler Oliver scored 10 apiece.

Liam Doyle replied with 19 for the Coyotes and Karson Valgardson added 18.

In girls’ play Tuesday, top-seeded LCI Clippers advanced to the JV final with an 87-51 win over the No. 4 Medicine Hat Kwahommies.

Kya Bester led LCI scorers with 18 points while Maddi Boehme added 15, Annah Westrop 14 and Hadley Selk 11.

Emma Wintoniak replied with 13 for the Hat and Hannah Salmon added 11.

In the other semifinal, No. 3 Cardston Cougars held off the upsetminde­d No. 7 Raymond Comets 60-57 as Melissa Carter, Tenley Schaffer and Lauren Wolsey scored 12 points apiece for the winners and Leah Gibbings added 11.

Taylor Graves replied with 17 for Raymond while Haely Lamontagne and Tilani Iwaasa added 12 and 11 respective­ly.

LCI and Cardston will play for the girls’ JV title Saturday at 10 a.m. at the U of L.
