Hurricanes fall 6-2 to Warriors

- LETHBRIDGE HERALD

Lethbridge Hurricanes completed their road swing on a losing note Wednesday night. The Hurricanes were handed a 6-2 loss by the Western Hockey League-leading and nationally fourth-ranked Moose Jaw Warriors.

For the second night in a row, the opposing team’s power play did much of the damage as the Warriors went 3-for-6 on the man advantage. Leading scorer Jayden Halbgewachs posted the hat trick and added two assists for a five-point night.

The loss puts the Hurricanes at 32-28-6-0 following a 6-0 loss to the Brandon Wheat Kings on Tuesday.

The goals came early and the Warriors got three of the first four.

Brandon Schuldhaus got it started 37 seconds in and Halbgewachs netted his first of two power play goals at 4:07.

The Hurricanes cut the lead when Taylor Ross scored his 21st of the season, getting his stick on Calen Addison’s power-play point shot, but the Warriors responded shorthanded a mere 11 seconds later on a goal from Justin Almeida.

Special teams goals kept coming in the second as Hurricanes rookie forward Dylan Cozens scored on a shorthanded breakaway for his 22nd of the year to make it 3-2 Warriors.

But like Moose Jaw did after the first Hurricanes goal, they responded quickly and added their second man-advantage goal of the game as Halbgewachs scored his 63rd of the season.

The Warriors went to the power play for the fifth time early in the third and Brett Howden scored at 2:39 for a 5-2 lead.

Halbgewachs completed his hat trick bid and five-point night with 3:04 remaining in regulation. He now sits second in league scoring with 118 points, six back of Glenn Gawdin of the Swift Current Broncos.

The Canes were 1-for-4 on the man advantage.

Hurricanes goaltender Logan Flodell stopped 33 of 39 shots, while Warriors goaltender Bordy Willms put up a 27-save performance.

The Canes are back home Friday when they host the Red Deer Rebels at 7 p.m. at the Enmax Centre.
