It may not look like it outside just yet, but the first day of spring is less than two weeks away.

Fittingly, the 42nd annual Home and Garden Show will open on March 21 at Exhibition Park. Call it an omen, says Doug Kryzanowski, Ex Park’s marketing manager.

“Despite the weather outside, we think it’s going to be more popular than ever,” Kryzanowski said Thursday morning during a media and sponsor launch event.

“We had a great Ag Expo. This is more of an urban show for Lethbridge, but we do get a lot of drive-in traffic. It’s a really hot topic now, of course on HGTV.”

New seminars and presentations will be a part of the 2018 Home and Garden Show, where more than 20,000 people are anticipated to attend during the course of the show’s four days.

The show is also described as a “one-stop opportunity to find all of the home, yard and garden ideas,” and more than 300 exhibitors are registered for displays.

“We are close to capacity,” Kryzanowski said.

“I just think people are spending more time in home, in their backyard, and want to feel good about where they are. A house is a big investment nowadays for young (people) and for people that have lived in it for a long time. Given the American dollar, too, there’s a lot of people not travelling. Maybe that gives them an opportunity to spend more money on renovations.”

Returning to Home and Garden is BDO, who will be hosting their sixth annual Home and Garden Economic Forecast Breakfast, on March 23, with speakers: Scott Fash, Director of Planning and Development for BILD Alberta; Trevor Lewington, CEO of Economic Development Lethbridge; and Darrel Majdell, BMO Regional VP Alberta Prairies. The breakfast is by registration/RSVP only at agoing@bdo.ca.

The Burnco Landscaper Challenge will also return to Heritage Hall, where Lethbridge’s top landscape contractors will create a functional backyard landscape using a minimal selection of materials. The public will be invited to judge and vote for their favourite landscape display at the Burnco deck patio.

A full list of exhibitors will be available in the Home and Garden Show guide, to be dropped into city mailboxes starting Monday. The 42nd annual Home and Garden Show will run March 21 to 24 at Exhibition Park.
