Local residents are getting a chance to see some of the changes to the Yates Memorial Centre.

The city is planning a Yates Renovation Update at City Hall on Tuesday from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The drop-in event will allow the public to speak with City of Lethbridge staff and representatives from Songer Architecture Inc. to share design concepts and answer questions about the redevelopment of the Yates and Sterndale Bennett Theatres.

“I appreciate how well all our community groups have worked through this process,” said Coun. Belinda Crowson during city council’s regular meeting on Monday.

The event will feature conceptual drawings and a 3D model in order to help give a better image of the newly improved space. Refreshments will also be provided.

The facility is expected to reopen in July and will boast many new upgrades that will increase performance capabilities and enhance the audience experience.

The renovations include upgraded mechanical and electrical systems, a fire sprinkler system, performance audio/visual systems, acoustic treatments, upgraded finishes including paint, flooring and ceilings, catwalk relocation, dressing room revisions, seating replacements and roof replacement.

Changes to make the building more accessible are also underway. This includes barrier-free washrooms and the addition of elevators.

“Essentially, it’s a rework of the facility to bring it up to modern standards,” said Mayor Chris Spearman.

The total value of the project is $13.4 million. To date, close to $5.8 million has been spent on the project, and it is expected to finish on budget.

The Yates fully closed to the public in September 2017, including the ticket centre.

Ticket purchases or inquiries can still be made by calling 403-329-7328, in person at the Enmax Centre Ticket Centre, or online at enmaxcentre.ca.
