Medal games set for South Zone playoffs

The bronze medal side games took centre stage at the 4A South Zone basketball playoffs Friday at the 1st Choice Savings Centre.

After losing in the girls semifinals Thursday night, the Cardston Cougars and LCI Rams will battle for the bronze medal and a berth at provincial­s.

In a battle of the Cougars, Cardston edged Catholic Central 5150 in the bronze medal semifinal Friday afternoon and the Clippers defeated the Medicine Hat Kwahommies 85-62.

In the boys bronze medal semifinals, the Cardston Cougars earned a spot in the third-place game this afternoon at 4 p.m. with a 77-71 over the Catholic Central Cougars.

In the late semifinal Friday, the Raymond Comets defeated the Winston Churchill Bulldogs 100-93.

In the first girls semifinal Friday afternoon, Madison Leishman had a 14-point game for Cardston and Erika Smith had 12. Hanna Nunn chipped in with 10 points for Cardston.

Ashley Sazalski led Catholic Central with 14 points and Alissa Crawford also topped the 10-point mark with 11.

In the second game, the Clippers held a 43-33 lead at the half over Medicine Hat on their way to the win.

Jocelyn Neilson paced the Clippers with a 27-point game. Berkley Heggie and Krista Nelson had 19 and 11 points, respective­ly.

For the Kwahommies, Rhiannon Ware led the way with 20 points. Brooklyn Kaczynski hit for 10.

In addition to playing without starters Maitlynn Miller and Catriona Smith, the Clippers were also without Sara Stewart, who reinjured her ACL a few weeks ago.

In the Cardston and Catholic Central boys game, the teams were tied 37-37 at the half.

But Cardston was able to outscore Catholic Central 16-15 in the third quarter and 24-19 in the fourth

quarter to pull away for the win.

Taylor Barfuss and Ty Lewis each had 18 points for Cardston. Tristan Infanti had 15.

C.J. Hirsche had 22 points for Catholic Central and Shae Gibb had 16.

Nate Moreira added 14 points.

In the Comets win, Jeter Heggie had 35 points and

Drake Still added 22.

Parker Graves scored 17 points and Garrett Hasegawa had 11.

The Bulldogs were led by Isaac Greenwood’s 36-point night and Connor Hellofs had 18.

Caleb Kadijk and Sean Adams had 14 and 10 points, respective­ly.

In the late game Thursday night, the LCI Rams

advanced to tonight’s gold medal game with a 77-74 win over the Cougars.

Isaiah Bagnah led LCI with 19 points and Derek McNabb scored 16 points.

Jack-Henry Fox-Grey and Brandon Laycock added 15 and 13 points, respective­ly, for the Rams.

Lewis had 29 points for Cardston and Barfuss put up 21.
